Anyone who likes being active and loves going on adventures knows the importance of staying hydrated. Hydration packs are specially designed backpacks that make drinking more convenient and efficient. When a simple water bottle in the hand just can’t get the job done, a hydration pack is very handy. It allows you to carry different amounts of water depending on your need and quench your thirst – all in the utility of a backpack.
Well, hydration packs come in different shapes, sizes, and features for all kinds of activities. With all the options available, it can get confusing to decide which is the best for you.
You’ve come to the right place because we’ve listed some of the things that can guide you in choosing your hydration pack!
Know the type of hydration pack that you will need.
There are different types of hydration packs - from general-use hydration packs for casual hiking to more robust ones that are perfect for mountain biking, running, skiing, obstacle course racing, and snowboarding. General use packs are similar to a standard backpack but have the addition of hydration features such as a storage for a bladder and soft flasks. Running hydration packs are often a hybrid between a pack and a vest while biking packs have more bike-specific features. Some packs have additional features such as flask holders, cell phone holders, key clips, trekking pole storage, specifically designed to carry bottles, or bladders, or flask, or all three!
Consider the pack capacity.
Make sure that the hydration pack you choose has enough capacity for your water and gear. Hydration bladders also vary in size from 0.5 to 3 liters depending on how much water you need while hydration packs range from less than 2 liters to 50 liters capacity. Keep in mind that aside from water, you may also need some other things so figure out how much space you will need and test test test before that next big trail push.
Check the pack fit
Once you’ve figured out the type and capacity of the pack you need, don’t forget to make sure that it fits you properly. Check that it has the perfect fit and is comfortable for you. The pack should not move or bounce while you are in motion. Generally movement, and the subsequent chaffing that comes with that, is due to a pack not properly adjusted to fit.
